Bourne Ultimatum

                                                     

From the start of the movie the audience can see that the camera is handheld as the shots are shaky, the movements of the camera tell us that scene contains a lot of action. Bourne is Being chased by the police. This creates enigma as the audience are left wondering why he is being chased. The low lighting condition of the shots help to create suspense, as well as the slight blue tint on the shots which gives the effect that the setting is cold as it is in Russia.

As Bourne gets in to the train where it should be safe the lighting is even lower. There are mid-shots used as well as close ups to show his reactions and POV shots. The horn on the train is used to create suspense as each time it horns there is a sense that something is going to happen. The atmosphere of this scene is helped by the editing as the shots do not flow, but the quick cross cutting used gives the impression that there is some sort of danger and the seriousness of the scene. This also creates suspense as the audience knows something is going to happen but do not know when. The non-diagetic music is fast paced which creates tension as the violins are played in that way, the drums are chaotic which helps the scene is an action scene. 

As he is running from the police he should not be in the same place for too long so many shots of him jumping of the train are used, the quick cut show the urgency of the escape as well as the importance of him being of the train. As he escapes there is cross cutting used to show that more police are on their way.Through out the scene there has been no dialogue, so no information has been given to the audience about why the police are after him. Bourne runs into a building, and immediately starts to go through medication and some bottles are dropped show that he is in a rush, This also show by the use of a handheld camera as the image is again shaky. The audience then is given a shot where they see that Bourne is bleeding, Therefore the man on the run movie starts by showing that the protagonist is in danger and that he might be caught. The close up of Bournes face and his breathing tells the audience that he is no longer in any danger as the non diagetic music is lowered and the shots become steady.

As he is by a sink he started to remember a situation he was in, the two scenes over lap as Bourne was washing his face in the flashback. This give the audience information about the character helping them to empathize with him. During the flashbacks the images seem distorted telling us that Bourne does not know what is going on. During the flash backs the door to the building is opened by two police officers. This creates tension as Bourne does not know this and he could be caught and the non diagetic music is used to make the audience worry about Bourne.

The flashbacks stop when the police officer touches Bourne on the shoulder. The audience expects that he has now been caught, this is challenged as bourne knocks him out and is now in possession of a gun. The audience are on edge as we do not know if he will shot the second officer. When he doesnt and says " my argument is not with you", the audience are left wondering who is argument is.

The audience finds out that the main villain has is one of the people that has been captured and that it was in his plan to be captured, this makes the audience think what about what is going to happen, what is his plan. This scene has close up shots a sense of depth when the

REFLECTIONS ON GENRE

How useful is genre?

Todorov said: ' All media production takes place in the light of other media production and represents partly a response to the pre- existing world of production.'

From this quote we can see that all movies have had inspiration from previous movies, this mean that most movies that are being produced noes are not completely original. It is incredibly hard to make a movie that is completely original because of the number of movies that have come before it. For a movie to be original the idea and the story line has to be original, or the producer can use different genre that have not been put together before.

If you look at Disney's Frozen and Lion King they have the same plot, and same type of characters.



A genre of a film can be recognised by the audience every easily, depending on the audience they might prefer a certain genre over another. over time depending on the era different film genre have been more popular then other and during that time the genre does not really evolve because the producers know that the film will do well in the box office.

some genre are ideological, they have an influence on people on a daily basis. The movie can tell people how to act in a social environment. depending on what the genre is there are actors who are usually in that type of film. This is because when you think of that certain genre you think of that actor.

It is not the only the plot of films in the same genre that are similar but also the posters.

HORROR MOVIES:

silence of the lambs

Bird flapping in the background this usually means there is someone around as birds don't make that much noise if someone has not approached them.
she is sprinting, at some points she seems to sped up which means she could be running away from something. there are close ups of her face and then cuts to her feet as she is running.

Strong character, the first clue is when she is looking around and her jumper has the FBI logo on it.
while going into the building we can see that it is a male dominated area. With the men cleaning their guns.

When she gets on the elevator we can see that she is in a male dominated place, but when she gets of the elevator she is the only person in their which suggest that she has more authority than all the men that where in the elevator.

High angle shot used to show her surprise at the board with the killing and of people being found having been skinned.

The Purpose of a opening sequence:

The purpose of an opening sequence is to give the audience information about the movie, the opening sequence can include the cast members, the producers, directors and also the companies that where involved in the making and distributing of the film. The opening also tells the audience member what to expect from the movie, what the genre of the movie is, what the plot could be, what might happen or what is themes are in the movie.

The soundtrack during the opening also tells the audience what to expect, sometimes the opening shows the audience a part of the film and allows the audience to ask questions so they are intrigued and would make them want to watch on. This is done by reviling an important enigma at the beginning  and is resolved at the very end of the movie.This creates tension and suspense which are major themes in thriller.

The Preliminary Task

Preliminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.
This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

My time line

The software i used for editing the clip was Final cut. In final cut i was able to cut the recorded clips to the length i need it to be.

This is my timeline in final cut, this shows where all the clips are placed as well as the audio.





For the title i used live type. I was able to changed the effects on the letters and then import it to Final cut.

Planning:

For planning we wrote a short script and wrote all the shots we could use for the script.

We had a story board explaining what would happen in each shot.

When filming we took videos of the same action in many angles. This is to add prospective and suspense when being watched. While filming we used a light reflector so we can see the characters properly, we also used a dolly when filming when the camera was moving.
